Tom Abbink (1980, Haarlem), afgestudeerd aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag (2009), maakt installaties waarin autobiografische elementen, ontdekkingsreizen en fantasie samenkomen in een geheel. Het paradijs blijkt niet door een god maar door de mens zelf geschapen en is in de eerste plaats een constructie, een projectie van al onze denkbare verlangens ineen. De mens als ontdekkingsreiziger staat centraal in zijn werk.

"The exploration of the New World, and the discovery of a wide range of species, had created a rich new topography of paradise. Eden, or so they thought, must lie somewhere on the southern hemisphere. What if we could ship these wonders of the Tropics and the Orient. Collect, name and classify them within the boundaries of a botanical garden in Padua or Paris. Then we could make a complete and lively encyclopaedia of the creation that would show the awe inspiring, inventiveness of the creator". (Simon Schama. Landscape and Memory, 1995)

Voor Kunsteyssen heeft Abbink een werk gemaakt dat inhaakt op het industriële verleden van het pand. Met de arrogantie van Hemingway maakt hij een sculptuur die wordt bijgestaan door een intieme fotoserie, waarin hij Kunsteyssen helpt op hun zoektocht naar een nieuwe identiteit.
